A Little Bit about Hooks
What are hooks for?
Hooks offer leverage with direct action type bits. This feature rolls the mouthpiece forward and downward into the tongue and bars with rein pressure, encouraging the horse to break at the poll. Most traditional ring bits only apply backward pressure into the tongue and bars which can lead a horse to resist.
How do you properly attach a bit with hooks? Will the bit look different from a traditional bit?
With the hook design, rein and headstall attachment will be easy and subtle.
To attach hooks:
For reins: Insert rein from outside cheek, down through the bottom slot in the ring and fasten. The rein will wrap around the outside of the ring, looking much like a traditional ring.
For headstall: Insert headstall from outside the cheek, up through the top slot in the ring and fasten. The headstall wraps around the outside of the ring, much like a traditional ring.
For curb chain: Place curb chain hook in the right cheek's circular hole and secure by closing curb chain hook. Place open curb chain hook in left cheek's circular hole and hook on chain.
Are hooks legal in competition?
Hooks' acceptance in competition varies. Check with the competition's governing body's rules in regards to what is legal.
